We can all agree that we live in a time of unprecedented change. We can experience a whole range of emotions – from excitement to fear, from joy to sadness, and everything in between – depending on the type of change. Some change we love because it makes our lives better. Other change causes anxiety as it reminds us that we are not in control.
Today we were reminded that God is immutable which simply means “unchangeable.” Psalm 102:25 and Hebrews 1:10-12 tell us that God is “the same”… He never changes. But, what does it mean that God is unchangeable? More importantly, why does it matter?
We typically equate positive change with innovation… that which makes our lives better, easier. If you are like me, you are constantly trying to improve: to learn more, grow more, do more. I certainly have lots of room for improvement. But, that’s not the case with God. He is unchangeable because He is altogether, wholly and completely perfect. It is simply impossible to improve upon perfection.
Hebrews 6:17-20 reminds us that God is unchangeable in two key ways:
This gives me courage to face the kinds of change that would naturally cause me fear and anxiety. The unchangeableness of God is how the prophets of old walked with such faith being assured of things hoped for, convinced that things they had not yet seen would certainly come to pass (Hebrews 11:1).
The only One to devote my life to, entrust with my future, and rely upon for the salvation of my soul is an unchangeable God. He is our immovable rock, our solid anchor, and an ever-present help in time of trouble. If you are a follower of Christ – have trusted in Him alone for the forgiveness of your sins – the Bible says Jesus is coming back for us! We have an inheritance that is “in perishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven” for us (1 Peter 1:4)!
