Street Smart
Colossians 4:5-6
We can all admit that the world we live in is broken. It doesn’t take looking very far for us to come to the realization that this is a world in desperate need of Jesus. The question is how, as believers, do we have an impact in this broken world? How do we overcome the credibility problem that we face as believers? The answer is by being street smart.
In Colossians chapter 4 Paul gives us some advice on becoming street smart. The first is to walk in wisdom. Walking in wisdom requires us to show off what Jesus has done in our lives. This is the one thing we should not be afraid to brag about. It also requires us to saturate our mind and heart in Scripture. Apart from God working through us, it is impossible to walk in Godly wisdom. Lastly, we need to pray for opportunities to share the Gospel with others. Walking in wisdom requires us to seek out opportunities to show off the great things God has done in our lives.
Along with walking in wisdom, Paul calls us to speak graciously. This is done by pursuing relationships with others and praying to ask God for boldness. Leaving our comfort zones to share the Gospel can be difficult. For us to be able to leave our comfort zones we need to ask God for boldness to share out faith in the new relationships we pursue.
Colossians teaches us that God’s definition of being street smart is very different than the worlds definition:
The world says trust experience. God says to trust Him.
The world says blend in. God says show off what He has done in your life.
The world says avoid situations. God says pursue opportunities to share your faith.
The world says look at what you can gain. God says look at what others gain.
To discuss today:
1. What steps do you need to take become more street smart?
2. In what areas of your life do you need God’s boldness?
