The Art of Neighboring: The Time Barrier

In Luke 10:38-42 we see the story of Mary and Martha with Jesus. Martha seemed to be a wonderful hostess who cared deeply that Jesus was honored at their home. Mary, on the other hand, “sat at the Lord’s feet and listened to his teaching.” Martha was distracted with serving, which means she felt “pulled away”. Martha didn’t have less time, just bad priorities in the moment.
Our time is our most precious commodity. We guard it, protect it, and hide it. We all have 24 hours each day, and we spend time doing the things that are most important to us. We spend time with what we love the most.
What Martha was doing was not “bad”, but Jesus told her that Mary chose the better portion. Martha was anxious and troubled. The anxiety was something she was choosing to fret over, which let the trouble (pressure) get to her. We often do the same thing!
Jesus lived with a sense of rhythm. He was always laser-focused and full of shalom. Remember, some of the greatest joys in life happen during the interruptions. Your life is a masterpiece, but some of you will never see it because of the busyness of the day.
Your neighbors are temporary. They won’t be in that home forever. How will you invest your time into them?
To Discuss Today:
1. What do you spend the most time on in your week? Remember, that is your priority.
2. What good thing do you need to say “no” to?
3. Take the 1 hour challenge…either prayer walk your neighborhood for an hour this week, AND/OR hangout in your front yard for an hour this week.
4. Pray for the courage to choose time for your next step with your neighbors.
